2 hours ago 0

The atmosphere was electric as Mexican players bid farewell to their fervent supporters at Azteca Stadium, their World Cup dreams cut short. Despite their efforts, Mexico fell to England 3-2 in a riveting match, ending their unbeaten streak in the tournament.

England’s performance was bolstered by a standout display from Jude Bellingham, who scored two goals in quick succession during the first half. Star forward Harry Kane also contributed, converting a penalty to secure England’s place in the quarterfinals. Raúl Jiménez managed to narrow the score by converting a penalty for Mexico, yet it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

“We made a couple of mistakes on the goals we conceded. This is the big leagues, and you can’t make mistakes because they’ll cost you,” said Mexico coach Javier Aguirre.

England now prepares to face Norway after they surprised many by defeating Brazil in another tournament upset. The upcoming quarterfinal will take place on July 11 in Miami.

Despite facing challenges like altitude and the passionate crowd at Azteca Stadium, England’s squad of Premier League talent showcased poise and professionalism. Coach Thomas Tuchel emphasized the team’s strength, comparing the intensity of the match to a final.

Mexico hadn’t conceded a goal in the World Cup until Bellingham’s first goal disrupted their defensive record. Just two minutes later, a costly mistake allowed Bellingham to score again, creating a daunting 2-0 lead.

Nevertheless, Juan Quiñones breathed life back into the game by scoring Mexico’s first goal soon after, igniting the crowd’s hope with their chants of “Sí se puede.” Mexico nearly equalized during stoppage time, yet Bellingham’s crucial defensive play kept them at bay.

The second half saw Mexico gain a man advantage after a red card was issued to Jarell Quansah, following a VAR review. However, England maintained their lead with a penalty scored by Kane, taking the score to 3-1.

“It was a crazy game, and we had to fight hard. It was one of those days when the referee is against us, and we managed to win,” Kane commented after the emotionally charged game.

Jiménez scored Mexico’s second goal, but England’s tactical adjustments prevented further advance. Despite valiant efforts from Mexican players like substitute Brian Gutiérrez, England’s strategy stifled Mexico’s creativity and attacks.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was reliable for England, effectively managing any threats. The loss may have been tough for Mexico, but players like Erik Lira remained positive.

“I think we lost with a lot of honor. I’m not satisfied, but I am happy with what we achieved,” Lira said.

Mexico’s history at Azteca Stadium includes very few losses, making this defeat significant. Coach Aguirre reflected on their efforts as a stepping stone for future successes.

“We’ve laid a solid foundation. It’s very painful because we dreamed and had high hopes. Losing this way hurts a lot. All 26 of us made them very happy,” Aguirre shared.
