Trump Advocates for U.S. Control Over Greenland Amid NATO Tensions

In Ankara, Turkey, President Donald Trump emphasized the United States should control Greenland, sparking tension with Denmark, a NATO ally. This statement came as the trans-Atlantic military alliance announced significant arms deals during a summit to address U.S. concerns.

Trump labeled Greenland as significant for the U.S., falsely claiming it’s surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships and promising to protect it. He stated, “That should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark,” during discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

NATO, founded to safeguard its 32 members’ territories, faced pressure to increase defense spending, a longstanding issue for Trump. Meanwhile, Trump announced lifting sanctions on Turkey, easing the path for its re-entry into the F-35 fighter jet program.

This decision follows Turkey’s purchase of Russian-made S-400 missile systems, which led to its removal from the program. The U.S. Secretary of State, Treasury Secretary, and Defense Secretary are reportedly working on resolving these issues.

Erdogan welcomed Trump with an elaborate ceremony, highlighting their strong relationship. Trump described their bond as “a chemistry that works,” acknowledging Turkey’s loyalty.

However, concerns persist over selling F-35s to Turkey, especially from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He expressed that arming Turkey could endanger Israel.

Opposition also exists among U.S. lawmakers, citing the continued presence of Russian missile systems in Turkey. Legal challenges remain, even if sanctions are lifted.

During the summit, NATO showcased military projects worth billions to align with U.S. expectations. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced the acquisition of Saab’s GlobalEye surveillance aircraft to replace vintage radar planes.

The summit also saw the announcement of multinational purchases of air-to-air refueling and transport aircraft from Airbus and plans to obtain Triton surveillance drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy advocated for NATO membership, highlighting Ukraine’s military capabilities. He noted Ukraine’s success against Russian forces and the continued conflict with Russia.

Concerns about a potential Russian hybrid attack on Europe persist, although NATO has effectively deterred direct conflicts with member countries, according to a senior official.
