The senator’s aides have not disclosed details about his condition, leading to speculation about his recovery and ability to return to the Senate when it reconvenes after a recess.

McConnell, who is retiring at the end of his term, had conversations with Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Republican Whip John Barrasso. Thune reported a lengthy and substantive phone discussion with McConnell regarding national security. Barrasso, who spoke with McConnell for 20 minutes, mentioned discussions on Senate races and the Supreme Court.

Republican strategist Scott Jennings also communicated with McConnell, discussing politics, foreign policy, and Senate history. These talks suggest that McConnell remains engaged despite his hospitalization.
