Rahm Emanuel Advises Against Impeaching Trump and Calls for Ethics Reforms

54 minutes ago 0

Former Chicago Mayor and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel advised Democrats to avoid pursuing impeachment against President Donald Trump if they gain control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming elections. Speaking on NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press,’ Emanuel called for a focus on ethics reforms.

Emanuel stated, ‘Short answer: No, because it’s not going anywhere, and it’s going to be a food fight. It’s just going to bring back the politics of fighting.’ He argued that impeachment efforts are unlikely to succeed and would reinforce negative perceptions about Washington.

You’re never going to get an impeachment. If you do that, you just prove all Washington is what the American people think. It’s Disneyland on the Potomac. Deliver the change. Deliver a comprehensive ethics package that uses the investigations to then deliver change.

As midterm elections approach, Democrats have a significant edge over Republicans. Current projections suggest Democrats may win 215 seats to the GOP’s 201, needing only three more victories in 19 toss-up races to secure a majority.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has not confirmed whether he would support impeachment proceedings, emphasizing the need to make life more affordable for Americans.

We haven’t ruled anything in or out in terms of accountability. Our focus is going to be to make life more affordable for the American people. We have to drive down the high cost of living.

Emanuel, who served two terms as Chicago’s mayor and as chief of staff for President Barack Obama, is rumored to consider a presidential run in 2028. He presents himself as a moderate and opposes the influence of democratic socialists, but he supports candidates on the far-left, such as Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.

Emanuel questions popular progressive stances, stating, ‘You think people wanna support defunding the police? You think they wanna support open borders, open prisons? Run on it. I don’t, and that’s not the party’s position.’ He acknowledges a debate within the party between its progressive and pragmatic factions.

During the Texas Tribune Festival, Emanuel praised Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico for being ‘strong’ and ‘comfortable’ discussing his faith. He expressed support for El-Sayed’s candidacy in Michigan, focusing on voter choice being crucial.

Look, I mean, it doesn’t matter what I do… it matters what the Michigan voters think. And that’s what’s gonna determine this. I support Democrats winning the Senate.
