Fire in Bangkok Music Bar Claims 30 Lives, Sparks Safety Concerns

A devastating fire at a music bar in Bangkok has increased the death toll to 30, officials reported Tuesday. The blaze, which occurred at Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar, resulted in more than 70 injuries, with 24 individuals in critical condition. The fire broke out late Sunday in a northern section of the Thai capital and was the deadliest incident in 17 years.

Firefighters took 30 minutes to control the blaze at the bar, which could accommodate up to 600 patrons. The number of attendees on Sunday night remains unknown. Current investigations focus on determining the fire’s cause and whether the bar adhered to safety regulations.

Many victims were found in windowless bathrooms, where they had tried to escape the flames. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced a comprehensive review of similar venues to assess potential risks and ensure enforcement of safety standards.

On Tuesday, mourners and former patrons laid flowers at the scene, expressing condolences through handwritten notes in various languages, including Thai and Korean. The aftermath of the fire—charred musical equipment and furniture—was visible along the street, investigated by officials.

University student Thanakon Phoklang paid his respects at the site, reflecting on the tragic loss. Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, warned of potential fire hazards inherent in the building’s design, like being enclosed with low ceilings and possibly using decorative foam without proper flame-retardant treatment.

Amorn noted the bar was classified as a restaurant with live music, allowing it to bypass stricter fire safety requirements for entertainment venues. He advocated for a revision in fire safety procedures and stressed the importance of enforcing existing laws to prevent future tragedies. Government action is now crucial to address these pressing safety concerns.
