Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Dominates Box Office

The film industry has spent years focusing on intellectual property over talent, with franchises taking the spotlight away from directors and movie stars. Characters like Harry Potter, Optimus Prime, and Iron Man became the main draw for audiences.

Christopher Nolan stands out as an exception. His latest release, ‘The Odyssey,’ turned Homer’s ancient epic into a blockbuster, highlighting Nolan’s strong appeal. Over its opening weekend, ‘The Odyssey’ generated approximately $124.5 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada, according to Rentrak, a film data service. This makes it the largest domestic opening for a live-action film in 2026, following ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’

A majority of people who purchased tickets noted Christopher Nolan as their main reason for watching the film, based on data from PostTrak, a film industry research service. The star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and others, played a significant role as well.

IMAX screenings contributed about 24% of ‘The Odyssey’s’ opening revenue. AMC Entertainment, the largest theater chain worldwide, offered 70-millimeter IMAX screenings at early hours such as 2 a.m., 3 a.m., and 6 a.m., which almost all sold out.

Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, noted the film’s strong advance sales, with some theaters selling out IMAX film shows five weeks in advance. This suggests a lasting demand for the movie in various locations.
