Madison Police Involved in Fatal Shooting After Knife Altercation

A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, fatally shot a man who allegedly brandished a knife during a confrontation. This incident occurred as law enforcement was investigating a report about someone inspecting vehicle doors on Wednesday afternoon, according to police statements.

Police responded to the Marquette neighborhood at approximately 1 p.m. due to a report of an individual checking parked cars, said Madison Police Chief John Patterson during a press conference. The person attempted to escape on a bicycle but was later apprehended by officers around 1:35 p.m., Patterson explained.

The suspect either fell off the bicycle or was taken off by officers, leading to a struggle in the intersection, Patterson stated. During the altercation, the man allegedly revealed a fixed-blade knife. An officer sustained injuries from the knife while trying to arrest him.

The police department released a photo showing the knife on the ground, as part of a news release concerning the lethal encounter. Videos of the incident, captured by bystanders, circulated online, including one verified by NBC News. This video shows officers restraining the man while someone yells, “Let go!” Repeated shouts of “He’s got a knife!” are also audible.

The video depicts an officer shouting “Taser!” while the man stands being held by police. Seconds later, as the man is on the ground, a male officer appears to fire three rounds, after which the man ceases to move.

Chief Patterson remarked that he has viewed some of the videos but acknowledged that other footage is still under review. He cautioned against drawing conclusions from a singular perspective, as not all angles and details were captured.

The incident was not recorded on body camera footage, noted Patterson, since none of the involved officers were equipped with body cameras.

The deceased individual was described as a man in his 30s, but his identity was not disclosed during the press conference. Patterson expressed condolences to the man’s family for their loss.

The officer who discharged the firearm was not identified either. Patterson described the officer as a veteran in the police force.

Madison Council Alder Davy Mayer, representing the district where the shooting occurred, mentioned staying in contact with city officials and police. Mayer emphasized prioritizing community safety and ensuring full transparency about the incident.

Four officers were present at the scene, and all will be placed on administrative leave, following standard procedure in police shootings.

A witness, Michael Doubek, who filmed part of the incident, recounted returning from a local grocery store when he saw police vehicles speeding by. Doubek described witnessing officers attempting to subdue the individual when shots were fired. He also noted police moving a knife aside after the shooting.

Footage from a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter showed a group of protesters marching on Wednesday evening. Consequently, an outdoor performance by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra was canceled.

An independent investigation into the shooting will be conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation. Additionally, the district attorney will carry out a review of the incident.
