Investigation Into Post-World Cup Final Incident

GENEVA — FIFA is examining the conduct of Argentina’s team following the World Cup final. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente called the incidents “intolerable and unacceptable.”

FIFA has tasked one of its disciplinary prosecutors with reviewing the confrontations that occurred after Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory on Sunday, which ended Argentina’s title defense. The altercation involved Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Spain’s Eric Garcia and Gavi. Additionally, Rodri, Spain’s captain, was struck in the stomach by Argentina’s Nahuel Molina.

De la Fuente, speaking to Spanish broadcaster TVE, stated, “It cannot be allowed,” noting he was not aware of the incidents at the time as he was celebrating with others. He expressed disappointment, stating, “I find it intolerable and unacceptable from players of such caliber.”

FIFA has not disclosed the scope of its investigation, nor whether statements will be obtained from Spain’s players and staff. Argentina’s assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, apologized for an altercation with Dani Olmo, describing it as a shove instead of a punch.

In a TVE interview, De la Fuente commended his team for their response to the aggression, saying, “Our players always kept their composure and behaved like true professionals.” The Spanish team formed a guard of honor for Argentina as they went to receive their medals from U.S. President Donald Trump. However, when Rodri lifted the trophy, many Argentina players turned their backs.

FIFA rules allow for disciplinary proceedings against member associations, clubs, and individuals. There is no timeline for the proceedings, so it is uncertain when potential penalties might affect Argentina, which has no upcoming competitive games.
