Tragic Avalanche Claims Nirmal Purja and Nine Other Climbers

Famed mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known for his 2021 Netflix documentary, died along with nine other climbers on Saturday. The tragic incident took place on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th tallest mountain, located in Pakistan.

The climbers were killed by an avalanche on the 26,414-foot-tall Broad Peak in the Karakoram range on Thursday.

The world has lost one of mountaineering’s greatest climbers. We mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy.

These words came from Elite Exped, the company associated with the expedition. They further stated that No words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss.

Purja was leading the group up Broad Peak during this fateful mission.

On Friday, a Pakistani rescue team recovered three bodies, including American Sarah Mallory Geis, but halted due to adverse weather.

Efforts resumed Saturday in the challenging conditions to recover the remaining bodies.

The loss of these courageous climbers is immeasurable to the global mountaineering fraternity.

The climbing team included individuals from Pakistan, Nepal, China, and British-Nepali Purja. The climbers were on an ascent in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

Purja’s feats are well-documented in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible,” showcasing his ambition to summit the world’s 14 tallest peaks in only seven months.

British Defense Minister Wes Streeting described Purja as an inspirational man recognized globally for his remarkable mountaineering exploits.

At 43, Purja had a distinguished career serving in the British army with the Gurkhas and later with the British special forces.
