The Senate Judiciary Committee has moved Todd Blanche’s nomination forward to the full Senate. While Republicans on the committee largely support the nomination, some opposition comes from figures like Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
There is criticism from progressive Democrats. For instance, Sen. Cory Booker has expressed concerns about Blanche’s record. On the other hand, Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, announced he will not support Blanche, President Donald Trump’s choice for attorney general.
During a podcast appearance with comedian Jon Stewart, Fetterman mentioned he would not vote for Blanche. This follows discussions on the Democrats’ use of the Senate filibuster against Trump’s Cabinet nominees. “Many of them I didn’t vote for,” Fetterman noted.
Fetterman has shown varied support for Trump’s nominees, having voted for about half. However, his vote will not support Blanche this time, similar to the opposition from Collins, who remarked that Blanche has eroded departmental independence. Collins had earlier voted to confirm Blanche as an assistant attorney general.
The Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote concluded along party lines, 12-10, advancing Blanche to the full Senate. Blanche’s confirmation faces hurdles with confirmed opposition from Fetterman and Collins. Other senators like Bill Cassidy and Lisa Murkowski remain undecided. Meanwhile, senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis have shifted to supporting Blanche after he abandoned a controversial fund proposal.
