Cubs Dominate Royals, End Grueling Game Stretch

1 week ago 0

The Chicago Cubs concluded a challenging stretch of 17 straight games without a break, finishing on a triumphant note against the Kansas City Royals. The team’s offense came alive against starter Randy Dobnak and the bullpen. Meanwhile, left-hander Matthew Boyd delivered a solid performance, giving up only two runs over seven innings, leading to a 10-2 victory that secured the series win. The Cubs (69-50) relish the break on Monday, their first since July 23, boasting a 12-5 record over this grueling series.

Manager Craig Counsell navigated the absence of off days by strategically resting key players. This approach included utilizing Pete Crow-Armstrong as the designated hitter for two consecutive games and three of the last five. This decision aimed to manage player fatigue as effectively as possible.

The series victory continues the Cubs’ momentum. They have achieved a 35-16 (.686) record since June 11, second only to the Boston Red Sox in that period, following a challenging 7-22 stretch earlier in the season. Counsell noted that consistent starting pitching was crucial in maintaining this run. He emphasized that the starters’ impressive performances, in terms of innings pitched and runs conceded, played a vital role in sustaining their momentum through the tough game stretch.

1. Rotation, Led by Matthew Boyd, Excels

Boyd’s performance was pivotal to the Cubs’ recent success. Despite dealing with injuries within the pitching staff, Boyd’s contributions strengthened the Cubs’ grasp on the top National League wild-card position. On Sunday, Boyd dazzled through six innings before exiting in the seventh, allowing only two runs. His remarkable 2.35 ERA since returning from the injured list demonstrates his impact on the team.

Boyd remarked on the rotation’s collective effort during the challenging stretch, highlighting their ability to overcome adversities such as intense competition and adverse weather conditions. He expressed optimism that the best is yet to come from the team. New additions like Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes are settling into the rotation, potentially adding further depth to the pitching lineup.

2. Ian Happ Surges Out of Slump

Ian Happ’s breakthrough performance added significant firepower for the Cubs. Previously enduring a tough 0-for-22 streak, Happ turned around his performance in the last two games of the series, hitting home runs on consecutive days and amassing five hits, including two home runs and a double, over that span.

Happ’s resurgence is promising as the Cubs approach the last seven weeks of the season and aim for the postseason. Counsell expressed confidence in Happ’s ability to continue delivering crucial contributions for the team.

3. Miguel Amaya Maximizes Limited Playtime

Miguel Amaya has seized his limited opportunities to make an impact. Despite Carson Kelly securing most of the at-bats, Amaya showed determination and skill in his performance. In his most recent start, Amaya tallied two hits, including a decisive three-run homer in the seventh inning, which was his first home run in 38 games.

Amaya’s offensive contributions, such as his noteworthy 107 wRC+ and .349 on-base percentage, are impressive given his limited playtime. He attributes his success to remaining focused and staying engaged with hitting coaches. Amaya’s competitive spirit drives him to capitalize on every opportunity at the plate.
