Tommy John, the former Major League Baseball pitcher known for his groundbreaking elbow surgery, passed away at the age of 83. His agent, Mike Maguire, confirmed John’s death in a statement.
“Thomas Edward ‘Tommy’ John Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood Ranch last night surrounded by his loving wife, Cheryl, and his sister-in-laws Judith Florentino and Karen Jordan,” the statement read.
A private celebration of life will take place in Florida. John’s death followed a farewell message he released during the New York Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day. In that message, he expressed gratitude as he shared his health battles with fans.
John said, “I want to thank the Yankees organization & the Steinbrenner family for giving me this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, along with all the friends & fans who followed me throughout my 26-year career.” He also thanked Dr. Jobe, the surgeon who performed the procedure that extended his career and has since become a standard in treating pitchers.
Tommy John underwent the surgery in 1974, missing the 1975 season but ultimately winning over 160 games post-surgery. His resilience led him to become a four-time All-Star, playing eight seasons with the Yankees alongside stints with several other teams, including the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cleveland Indians.
He concluded his career with a 3.34 ERA and 2,245 strikeouts. Reflecting on his career, John reminisced, “The day I left for my first job as a pitcher, my father looked at me & said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it big in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana.'”
Tommy John’s legacy is not only marked by his accomplishments on the field but also by the impact his surgery has had on future generations of baseball players.
