Arkansas Football Player Encounters Venomous Snake in Helmet

A high school football player at Maumelle High in Arkansas experienced a startling event during practice. The player discovered a 2-foot-long venomous snake inside his helmet.

The incident occurred after warmups when the student noticed unusual movement in his helmet. Seeking assistance, he approached an assistant coach who found a cottonmouth snake nestled behind some padding. The Maumelle Animal Shelter confirmed the discovery.

The snake, known as a cottonmouth or pit viper, proved difficult to remove. Police officers had to pour water into the helmet, forcing the reluctant snake into a bag. Animal services technicians identified the cottonmouth, a highly venomous snake native to Arkansas. They relocated it to a wooded area, ensuring the safety of school grounds and the snake itself.

Chris Davis, the animal services director, expressed relief that the player remained unbitten despite wearing the helmet for almost an hour. Davis remarked, “It was unreal. To believe it, you had to be there and take pictures.”

Following the incident, the player switched helmets and resumed practice. The situation compelled the head coach to advise players to thoroughly check their equipment for insects or potentially dangerous creatures.

“Snakes and other critters can find their way into dark, enclosed spaces—especially helmets, shoes, bags, boxes, and other items left outside or undisturbed,” stated the Maumelle Animal Shelter in a Facebook post, assuring everyone was safe.

The shelter advised always to inspect outdoor gear like helmets, shoes, and gloves carefully before use. They noted, “A quick check only takes a few seconds and could prevent a scary encounter—or worse.”
