Cubs Face Roster Challenges Amid Injuries and Pitching Struggles

46 minutes ago 0

Impact of Dansby Swanson’s Injury

The Chicago Cubs’ roster came under scrutiny before their game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. This intensified when Dansby Swanson left the field after his first pitch, resulting in a disappointing 11-4 loss for the Cubs. Swanson, the team’s shortstop, left due to tightness on his left side, which might result in a stint on the injured list, according to manager Craig Counsell.

We don’t really know anything yet. We’ll find out more tomorrow once we get some imaging done. At that point, everything’s kind of TBD. – Dansby Swanson

Replacing Swanson, rookie James Triantos took over second base while Nico Hoerner shifted to shortstop. In Swanson’s absence, Hoerner will continue at shortstop with rookie Pedro Ramírez likely filling in at second base. Ramírez made his major league debut at first base, giving Michael Busch a rest. The Cubs lack a backup first baseman since the trade deadline and seek someone to relieve Busch or cover if he’s injured.

First base is a spot where we’re a little concerned about what’s next should something happen to Michael. – Craig Counsell

Pitching Concerns: Edward Cabrera’s Struggles

Edward Cabrera returned from the injured list, addressing pitching woes, being a key offseason acquisition. Traded from the Miami Marlins, Cabrera came for top prospects Owen Caissie and Cristian Hernández. His return led to the temporary move of versatile pitcher Javier Assad to Iowa to maintain the 26-man roster.

Assad, with a 1.88 ERA since July, had been invaluable. However, due to limited options, Counsell chose to keep relief pitchers Ryan Rolison and Ryan Zeferjahn. This left Assad as the odd man out for the moment.

I think at this point the decision we made was to preserve every pitcher we could. – Craig Counsell

Cabrera’s Performance and Future in Rotation

Cabrera’s return was marred by struggles, allowing seven earned runs. His ERA rose to 5.68, similar to the 5.81 in his debut season in 2021. A blister on his pitching hand impaired his control, leading to poor performance in the fourth inning.

That was what affected me there in the last inning. I tried to battle, but I couldn’t finish the inning. – Edward Cabrera

David Peterson, acquired from the Mets, provides a lefty bullpen option. Cabrera’s command issues, including multiple walks, have thrown his status into question. With limited time for adjustment, alternatives like Peterson, Assad, and Colin Rea present options.

It’s a blister. I have had those in the past. In my mind, I’m not going to miss a start over a blister. – Edward Cabrera
