Robert “Bobby” Dominic, a 71-year-old Chicago businessman, faces charges of tax evasion. He allegedly concealed his interest in a sweepstakes gaming firm connected to the family of Joe Berrios, a former Cook County assessor. Dominic has been tied to the Outfit’s Grand Avenue crew for years, known for links to Richard’s Bar in Chicago.
The indictment, unsealed in U.S. District Court, accuses Dominic of tax evasion and failing to file tax returns. An arraignment date is pending, and Dominic is representing himself. Attempts to contact Dominic for comments have been unsuccessful.
According to the indictment, from 2014 to 2020, Dominic received significant payments through fake entities owned by a former girlfriend. Following her death in January 2020, Dominic allegedly created another fake company with another woman, referred to as Individual B, to continue receiving payments.
Federal prosecutors recently subpoenaed Individual B to testify, offering immunity. However, just before her scheduled testimony, she married Dominic, ostensibly to halt her legal obligation to testify.
Dominic’s wife, uncharged but legally associated with Dominic, was involved in forming Promotional Consulting Inc., linked to Dominic’s business address and his previous legal representation.
The indictment does not specify the amount Dominic allegedly evaded in taxes but refers to over $1.2 million received without corresponding tax declarations.
The charges stem from a major investigation into the shady business dealings in sweepstakes gaming. This probe led to the downfall of figures like former state Rep. Luis Arroyo and businessman James Weiss. Weiss, married to the daughter of Joe Berrios, was recently convicted of bribery.
Mob connections feature prominently. Dominic is reportedly linked to Frank “The German” Schweihs, a notorious mob figure. Federal prosecutors have evidence, including tapes, describing Dominic as the individual Weiss relied on for protection and business dealings.
Weiss’ attorney has denied any connection between Weiss and Schweihs. However, evidence and testimonies during Weiss’ trial indicate otherwise. State records reveal complex business ties across multiple entities linked to Weiss, often shared addresses used by Dominic and his associates.
Dominic is described as an ‘honest’ gangster in recordings, with reported involvement in Weiss’ ventures, despite official denials.
James Weiss, now serving prison time, and others face legal consequences from a high-profile federal investigation. Meanwhile, related figures like Arroyo have also been sentenced for their roles. Dominic remains a focal point due to alleged connections and current legal battles.
