On ‘The Big Weekend Show,’ retired Marine Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews shared his experiences of the chaotic evacuation in Afghanistan. U.S. Marines, including Vargas-Andrews, had to improvise due to inadequate preparation. Vargas-Andrews lost his right arm and left leg in the August 26, 2021, suicide bombing.
During the evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Marines faced overwhelming crowds without adequate support, despite warnings from leadership. Vargas-Andrews stated, ‘Everything we were doing while we were there was like figuring it out on the go,’ acknowledging their training to ‘adapt, improvise and overcome.’
He recounted the situation, comparing it to ‘World War Z.’ Vargas-Andrews added, ‘We were lacking in the support… There was no tent set up to process refugees.’ He described the dense crowd as similar to a room filled with sand.
Reflecting on the lack of preparation, Vargas-Andrews noted, ‘We were just put in a very, very precarious situation.’ He recalled warnings about potential threats but emphasized that proactive measures were lacking. He attributed the problems to ‘decades of action and inaction and just poor decision-making,’ involving multiple administrations and organizations.
Vargas-Andrews appreciated the recent recognition by the Department of War of Marines who served during the evacuation, but stressed the need for accountability. He remarked, ‘It’s a good step in the right direction… the real important things still haven’t happened.’
