Data centers in the U.S. have faced significant opposition from 70% of Americans worried about noise and environmental impact, according to a Gallup poll. Yet, land sales for data centers have turned some Salem Township residents into millionaires. Michael Hodgson sold his 14-acre property for millions, enabling him to retire.
Nearly 100 families in Salem Township sold over 1,700 acres this year to a developer for $586 million, at more than $300,000 per acre. Previously, land was valued under $5,000 per acre. Jack Sordoni, a local land developer, noted that the deal includes community benefits to improve emergency services and education.
David and Marilee Kiliti, who sold their 89-acre farm for over $20 million, are building their dream home locally, offering economic support to the community. The data center expansion could benefit 200 additional families.
Data centers, crucial for AI and other technologies, have led to strict regulations in Pennsylvania. Gov. Josh Shapiro addressed concerns, stating that projects must have community support, environmental protection, and power generation to proceed.
