The Devastation in Lahaina
Early on the morning of August 8, 2023, the Dadez family noticed smoke approaching their home in Lahaina, located on Maui’s west coast. The elements of strong winds, dry conditions due to drought, and abandoned sugar cane plantations fueled a massive wildfire. Initially, the fire seemed distant. However, by nightfall, its devastation reached the family’s doorstep.
Around 9 p.m., Marilou Dadez heard their neighbors rushing outside. Her husband, Randy, was some distance away in Kapalua, working as a shuttle bus driver. At home with their four children, Marilou made quick decisions as the situation intensified. Their daughter, Rhaliyah, described the alarming atmosphere, “The sky was orange. It was red. It was so scary.” The family evacuated in their 2001 Honda, taking only a single suitcase packed with essentials.
Navigating Chaos
Rianna, the Dadezes’ older daughter who was new to driving, managed to steer their vehicle through dark, ember-filled roads while explosions and destruction raged outside. The unfolding firestorm was the deadliest wildfire the U.S. had seen in more than a century. It ravaged over 2,170 acres and destroyed more than 2,700 structures. Tragically, it claimed at least 102 lives and forced 12,000 residents to lose their homes almost instantly.
Impact on Housing
In the aftermath of the disaster, Hawaii’s housing crisis deepened significantly. Within a year, homelessness increased by 87 percent, with 11,637 residents finding themselves without permanent shelter. Those living in temporary arrangements, including emergency shelters, FEMA-funded housing, or even friends’ garages, tripled.
The fire’s impact accelerated an already critical housing situation in Hawaii, highlighting the urgent need for rebuilding and community support to address these challenges.
