Trump Suggests His Name for Major Alabama Bridge Project

20 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump suggested that Alabama’s Mobile Bay bridge project could potentially bear his name. Speaking at a rally in Mobile, he highlighted the groundbreaking of the Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project. This infrastructure effort is expected to exceed $4 billion.

“All made possible with $3 billion in funding from the Trump administration,” Trump stated, referring to the project’s federal support. He humorously proposed the idea of naming the bridge after him, quipping, “Maybe I’ll be happy, and they’ll name the damn bridge after me.” He added, “Then I’ll say, have all the overruns you want, make it just absolutely the greatest bridge in the world.”

His comments followed a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, emphasizing the federal funding as a significant achievement for Alabama’s infrastructure.

Videos Show Empty Seats at Alabama Rally

Videos on social media depicted empty sections inside Mobile’s Mitchell Center during Trump’s address. Some upper-level seats were visibly unoccupied, which drew attention as Alabama has been among Trump’s strongholds. He has regularly attracted large crowds in the Deep South, holding events in larger venues.

Despite this, thousands of supporters attended the rally, cheering Trump’s remarks on various topics including immigration and the economy. The crowd responded positively when he mentioned federal funding for the Mobile Bay bridge and suggested it might carry his name.

Images of the partially filled arena sparked discussion about Trump’s political standing ahead of elections, as recent polls have indicated challenges in approval ratings.

A Massive Alabama Project

The Mobile Bay bridge project is the largest infrastructure development in Alabama’s history. The first phase includes building a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Mobile River connecting to the Bayway corridor. This phase is fully funded and expected to complete by 2031. A second, unfunded phase would replace the existing Bayway with a new structure.

The bridge has been a political issue in Alabama due to congestion along the I-10 corridor, affecting residents and businesses for years.

Trump Name Already Being Floated

Trump’s suggestion wasn’t out of the blue. Earlier, Republican Representative Barry Moore proposed naming the bridge the “Gateway to America Donald J. Trump Bridge.” This idea has gained traction among some Trump supporters.

Not everyone was supportive. Former Democratic Senator Doug Jones criticized the idea on social media, arguing Trump focused more on legacy projects than campaigning. He also noted that Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville previously opposed parts of the bridge funding debate.

Trump has often attached his name to various projects throughout his career. Supporters have floated similar proposals since his return to office, though few have materialized.

Echoes of the Kennedy Center Debate

The bridge remarks follow months of controversy involving Trump’s efforts to change the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. After returning to office, Trump placed allies in the institution, attracting criticism from the arts community.

Trump and his supporters have considered naming public institutions and projects after him, including Washington Dulles International Airport, showing his interest in associating his name with prominent landmarks.

Overall, Trump’s comments brought Alabama’s infrastructure project into a broader discussion about efforts to attach his name to significant public facilities.
