Former Trooper Criticizes Handling of Gang Violence in Twin Cities

2 hours ago 0

Former state trooper John Nagel has publicly criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and the Democratic Party’s approach to gang-linked violence rising in the Twin Cities. Residents in areas like Eden Prairie are fearful after several gang-related incidents, including a shooting outside a high school football game.

“Where is Ilhan Omar in all of this?” questioned Nagel in an interview with Fox News Digital. As a representative for the area, he believes Omar should be more proactive in addressing these issues. Nagel, who served 30 years in law enforcement, struggles to see active steps taken by Omar to tackle this situation.

“People are fed up,” said Nagel, who is challenging Omar in a deep blue district.

Nagel accuses other Democrats, like Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, of ignoring the problem and hindering law enforcement’s ability to control the situation.

“They’re restrained by politicians who prefer a soft-on-crime approach,” Nagel charged.

Nagel criticized Minnesota leaders, including Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison, stating that Democrats have failed to enforce the law properly. The public is frustrated with the leniency on crime, which Nagel claims has encouraged gang activities.

The issue was further discussed by Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher, who urged stronger accountability for gang members. Moriarty’s office is expected to review cases thoroughly if presented.

Adam Abdihakeem Adam, involved in the Eden Prairie shooting, faces charges related to the incident. His prosecution signifies a step toward addressing the violence.

Fletcher also addressed the misuse of “East African” to describe gang members, asserting the majority are Somali. He called for clear identification to aid the problem.

“We need to say what it is rather than avoid the term,” he commented.

People worry about being labeled as racist for highlighting Somali gangs. Nagel argues that law enforcement targets the offenders, not blaming the entire community.

“It’s about who’s committing crimes, not prejudice,” he explained.

Suggested solutions include forming a dedicated gang task force to enforce existing laws rather than creating new ones. Nagel believes arrests and incarceration are necessary to prevent deteriorating safety in Minnesota communities.

He will contest against Omar and Independent candidate DeVelle Jackson in forthcoming elections for the U.S. House seat in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
