A super PAC has launched an attack ad targeting Colorado Republican Representative Lauren Boebert for an incident in 2023. She was removed from a theater during a performance of the musical Beetlejuice.
The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC reported in a Federal Election Commission filing that it spent $1.5 million on ads opposing Boebert, who is seeking reelection in the upcoming November midterms. Newsweek reached out to both the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC and Boebert’s campaign and office for comments.
At the theater, Boebert and a male companion were escorted out for causing a disturbance. CCTV footage showed the congresswoman vaping and engaging in inappropriate behavior. The footage also captured Boebert making an obscene gesture as she was removed from the venue.
The attack ad combines clips from the CCTV footage with media headlines from the time. The ad’s narrator states, “Beetlejuice is the ‘80s family classic. Also the show that Lauren Boebert was kicked out of for groping her date in a room full of children.” It adds, “Costs are rising in Colorado and politicians are failing us. If Lauren Boebert can’t be trusted in a room full of kids, then she can’t be trusted in Congress.”
Following the incident, Boebert apologized, acknowledging that she “fell short of my values.” She attributed her actions to the stress of a “public and difficult divorce,” noting it was a “challenging personal time for me and my entire family.”
Focus of the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition
The PAC’s expenditure of $1.5 million on the Boebert ads remains unspecified regarding whether it covers additional content targeting the congresswoman. The Google Ads Transparency Center lists this as their only content related to Boebert.
Invest in Tomorrow Coalition is a clean-energy-focused super PAC that previously announced plans to spend $15 million to defeat Republicans opposed to renewable energy incentives across seven U.S. House races, Boebert included. Their ads often highlight vulnerabilities in lawmakers’ records rather than focusing on clean energy. For example, the PAC’s ads targeting Indiana Representative Victoria Spartz emphasized her healthcare record and allegations of personal gain through her position.
Boebert faces Democrat Eileen Laubacher in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, with recent polls indicating Boebert leads in the race.
