Introduction of New Candidates
For the first time since 2014, Indiana’s State Senate 6th District will have new contenders for leadership. Kate-Lynn Holley, a Democrat from DeMotte, and James “Jay” Starkey, a Republican also from DeMotte, are competing for the seat. State Sen. Rick Niemeyer, a Republican from Lowell, was voted out in the May primary.
Kate-Lynn Holley’s Campaign Focus
Kate-Lynn Holley, a real estate agent, is running to address economic challenges Indiana residents face. Holley expressed concern about how difficult it is for Hoosiers to make ends meet. She decided to run after talking to friends who feel disconnected from politics, believing their voices are not heard.
Holley’s career in real estate and her experience as a former professional wrestler have aided her campaign, especially in terms of self-promotion. Her primary campaign issue is affordability. She aims to improve housing affordability as she has seen potential homeowners priced out of the market. Holley advocates for lower utility, grocery, and gas prices to prevent families from struggling financially after purchasing a home.
Support for public schools is another priority for Holley. She intends to assess Indiana’s voucher program, which offers state-funded scholarships for private schools. According to state data, the program benefits families earning $250,000 to $300,000 annually. Holley questions this allocation, suggesting that a reevaluation is needed to redirect funds.
Although Starkey has official endorsement from several state representatives, Holley remains focused on her plan to connect with voters across party lines. She encourages voters to engage with their neighbors and recognize shared concerns rather than divisive political rhetoric.
James “Jay” Starkey’s Campaign Promises
James “Jay” Starkey, a construction project manager, did not respond to commentary requests but outlined his platform on his campaign website. Starkey identifies as a Christian conservative, aligning with President Donald Trump’s agenda for American prosperity.
Starkey promises responsive leadership, advocating for life protection from conception and traditional family values. He supports tax reforms that favor working and middle-class Hoosiers.
During the Republican primary, Starkey noted voter demand for new Republican state legislature members. He successfully challenged incumbents who opposed mid-census redistricting, gaining support from prominent figures like Gov. Mike Braun, Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, and Attorney General Todd Rokita.
Starkey champions strong immigration enforcement, increased school choice, and parental influence in children’s education. He resists diversity, equity, and inclusion, alongside critical race theory policies.
On his website, Starkey vows to encourage responsible economic growth for rural preservation and backs local law enforcement with necessary resources. He plans to initiate property tax reform due to anticipated taxation increases in the district.
Starkey also tackles utility price spikes related to data center development in Northwest Indiana. His campaign highlights the need for leaders who are connected with constituents rather than influenced by lobbyists or corrupt politics.
