Texas Democrat James Talarico Shifts Stance on Border Security

3 hours ago 0

Texas Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate, James Talarico, has recently highlighted a shift in his stance on border security. He criticized former President Joe Biden for border security issues in a new campaign ad released on Monday.

Previously, Talarico expressed a different view. An interview from 2019 reveals he suggested redirecting Texas’ entire $800 million biennial budget for border security to public education. This past statement contrasts with his current focus on border security in the campaign.

Talarico’s campaign did not provide specific instances of him openly criticizing Biden during his presidency. In the past, he voiced intentions to allocate funds meant for border security to improve public education, as per a discussion with The Austin Chronicle in 2019.

The upcoming election races in Texas have pressed Talarico to adopt a more moderate tone. This shift is significant as he competes in a predominantly Republican state with high rates of illegal immigration.

In a previous interview, Talarico acknowledged the inefficiency and expense of deploying boats, planes, and border agents at the border. His remarks emerge despite historical records from the Department of Homeland Security citing a reduction in illegal crossings to the lowest level in 55 years during the Trump administration.

Talarico, a former Texas legislature member and school teacher, has faced controversy for his far-left immigration enforcement views. He has previously advocated for dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), calling it a “secret police force.” Additionally, he has criticized Governor Greg Abbott’s border policies.

Despite past comments, Talarico now brands himself as a “border security” Democrat, supporting stronger immigration enforcement. His plan, reportedly backed by both Republican and Democratic border sheriffs, includes increasing the number of border patrol agents and focusing on deporting violent criminals.

Recently, Talarico temporarily withdrew from the campaign, leading to speculation about his status. He clarified his absence was due to recovering from the flu. Talarico is running against GOP candidate Ken Paxton as the election approaches.
