The San Francisco 49ers have remained unbeaten, but not without cost. One of their key players, wide receiver Mike Evans, continues to struggle with an ongoing Achilles issue.
During the game against the Washington Commanders, which ended in a 23-17 victory for the 49ers, Evans had to leave in the first half. Coach Kyle Shanahan later informed reporters that Evans is dealing with Achilles tendinitis. This ailment had already kept him out of practice leading up to the Week 6 matchup.
“It’s something that’s bothered him before, and something that has bothered him throughout the week,” Shanahan said. “When you have Achilles tendinitis like he does, it kind of is what it is. It flared up tonight. I hope he recovers throughout the week.”
Shanahan expressed confidence that the issue wouldn’t be a long-term problem and mentioned that he didn’t anticipate further scans on Evans’ tendon would be necessary.
Evans had been absent from practices all week, making his participation in the game a “pretty close call,” according to Shanahan. Despite having dealt with this issue earlier in his NFL career, Evans assured the coach of his ability to manage it.
“That was the confidence he gave me, but we knew he might not be able to last,” Shanahan explained.
Unfortunately, the concern came true as Evans, who had racked up 94 yards with three catches, was injured after a 16-yard reception just before halftime and did not return. Without him, the 49ers’ offense struggled. They were limited to 72 yards and only managed three points in the second half, going three-and-out on three consecutive fourth-quarter drives.
Other receivers, including Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, and Malik Turner, could only muster two catches for 35 yards combined. Adding to the team’s challenges, linebacker Luke Gifford and cornerback Upton Stout sustained groin and shoulder injuries, respectively.
Looking ahead to Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons, Shanahan hopes Evans will be ready to play. If Evans remains sidelined, Shanahan emphasized the need for other team members to elevate their performance.
There is a possibility that Christian Kirk, who has participated in two practices, might play in the upcoming game. However, Shanahan does not anticipate the return of receivers Demarcus Robinson or Deebo Samuel Sr. until after the team’s Week 8 break.
