Trump’s Influence in Louisiana Senate Race

1 month ago 0

President Donald Trump’s significant influence on Republican politics remains strong. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., affirmed this on Sunday, referencing Trump’s endorsement that affected a Louisiana Senate race and resulted in the defeat of incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy.

“Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable,” Kennedy commented on ‘The Sunday Briefing’.

Polls had indicated for more than a year that Sen. Cassidy was facing electoral difficulties. President Trump’s endorsement of Congresswoman Julia Letlow added force to the campaign, said Kennedy. Despite knowing the challenges, Cassidy chose to run.

In Saturday’s GOP primary, Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming came out ahead of Cassidy, as reported by The Associated Press. Letlow garnered roughly 45% of the vote, Fleming secured about 28%, and Cassidy received just under 25%. With neither candidate achieving over 50% of the vote, Letlow will face Fleming in a runoff election. The victor will then compete against the Democratic runoff winner in November.

Cassidy had previously voted to convict Trump in his impeachment trial more than five years ago. Trump criticized Cassidy on Saturday, labeling him as “a disloyal disaster” and “bad for Louisiana.” Following Cassidy’s defeat, Trump returned to social media to celebrate the senator’s exit, asserting “his political career is OVER!”

In his concession speech, Cassidy seemed to address Trump indirectly. He stated:

“When you participate in democracy, sometimes the results aren’t favorable. You don’t pout, whine, or claim the election was stolen. You express gratitude to the voters for the privilege of representation, and that’s what I’m doing.”

While Trump’s endorsement is considered a factor in Letlow’s success, Kennedy emphasized other elements influencing voter decisions. Changes in Louisiana’s election process led to voter confusion. Historically, open primaries were held, but the legislature shifted to closed primaries. Many voters were surprised at having to choose one primary for voting, and the election saw some confusion due to the legislature’s decision to postpone congressional elections while proceeding with the Senate election.

Overall, Trump’s endorsement significantly impacted the election, but other factors contributed as well. Kennedy observed that Cassidy had faced political challenges for over a year and Trump’s involvement wasn’t unexpected.
