Staten Island Shipyard Explosion and Fire: Fatalities and Injuries

A deadly explosion and fire occurred at a Staten Island shipyard on Friday, claiming the life of one civilian and injuring over 30 individuals, primarily members of the New York City Fire Department. The incident took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. within the basement of a metal structure at a shipping dock in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood, situated on Richmond Terrace between Lockman and Andros avenues. While the civilian was fatally injured, many FDNY personnel, including a fire marshal and a firefighter, suffered injuries.

FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito stated, “While teams were conducting search, rescue, and firefighting operations, an explosion occurred, injuring multiple firefighters operating inside and around the structure.”

Investigative Efforts:

The explosion is currently under investigation. FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore shared that responding teams faced limited visibility and heavy smoke, exacerbated by two workers reported as trapped in the basement. The operations were precarious due to the confined spaces, which posed significant risks to rescuers.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the responders, emphasizing their dedication, “As the fire grew, first responders did what they always do. They ran towards danger so others could escape to safety.” Additional eyewitness accounts described hearing the explosion, reinforcing the chaotic nature of the scene.

Afterwards, over 200 first responders were mobilized to manage the situation, with the fire being fully contained by around 7:20 p.m.

FDNY Recovery Updates:

The fire marshal sustained head trauma, featuring a small fracture and brain bleed. He is currently receiving intensive care in the hospital. Another firefighter required hospitalization but is reportedly recovering well.

Staten Island University Hospital doctors explained that injuries often occur from blast energy in confined spaces, impacting internal organs. Fortunately, these FDNY members did not suffer penetrating or organ damage.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella expressed solidarity, urging, “Let’s stick together. Let’s keep these folks in our prayers. Let’s make sure that this can’t happen again.”

Governor Kathy Hochul has confirmed coordination between state and city officials, as investigators seek to determine the cause of the fire and explosion. The deceased civilian remains unidentified, while another civilian is being treated for serious injuries.
