Emergency teams in Southern California have conducted a crucial mission overnight at an aerospace facility to neutralize a nearby chemical tank. The primary tank’s internal temperature had risen steadily to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. This prompted Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency and evacuate over 40,000 residents.
Escalating Threat
Orange County Fire Authority Incident Commander Greg Covey revealed that crews manually checked the tank’s temperature overnight. This was necessary because the gauge was hidden from drone cameras. Temperature increased by one degree per hour, starting from 77 degrees on Friday.
Fire Authority Interim Chief T.J. McGovern and Covey warned of two catastrophic outcomes. The tank might spill 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of harmful chemicals or could explode, possibly affecting neighboring tanks.
Water was continually sprayed on the overheated tank to control the temperature. It hoped to counteract the chemical threat by slowing down its hardening process from the outside.
Preventive Measures
Objective: Neutralize a 15,000-gallon tank to prevent explosion risk from a neighboring 7,000-gallon tank.
Officials developed a third strategy. Continuous water deluge aimed to ‘cure’ the chemical at a slower rate.
Crews established contingency plans for potential spills. Diking and damming measures were set to guide any leaked liquid into a commercial holding area. This would prevent the chemical from entering drains, channels, or the ocean.
Covey stressed that letting the tank explode is unacceptable. Experts from across the nation are advising on the crisis.
State Emergency Response
Governor Newsom’s emergency declaration allows resources to support the situation. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has been active for over 24 hours. Agencies assist local officials to protect public safety.
The incident started Thursday night when methyl methacrylate (MMA), a flammable plastic epoxy, leaked from a storage tank at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove.
Cooling measures initially controlled the situation, allowing residents temporary return home. However, the threat escalated on Friday morning.
Community Impact
Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra expanded evacuation zones to secure public safety. Displaced families were directed to several evacuation centers.
Health risks were highlighted by Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong from the Orange County Health Care Agency. There are severe dangers if the chemical reacts or escapes.
Warning: Toxic vapor can cause serious respiratory problems.
Rep. Derek Tran mentioned monitoring the situation and staying in contact with disaster relief officials.
FEMA and EPA comments were requested by Fox News Digital but no immediate response followed.
