New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and Senator Andy Kim met with families of detainees held at Delaney Hall, a migrant detention facility in Newark. They aim to address concerns about conditions and an ongoing hunger strike.
Both Democrats have requested access to the facility from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Hundreds of undocumented immigrants are held there.
Andy Kim posted on social media, stating the need to listen to detainees’ families and community advocates. He emphasized the necessity to close Delaney Hall immediately.
Claims of Poor Conditions
Governor Sherrill and Senator Kim appeared outside Delaney Hall. They joined efforts to shut down the facility, highlighting allegations of poor living conditions for detainees.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) acknowledged Kim’s visit but criticized Sherrill’s appearance as a political move. The visit coincided with protests involving around 125 demonstrators outside the facility during Memorial Day.
The protests targeted the privately run facility that transitioned into an immigration detention center last year. Reports include detainees initiating hunger strikes in protest of the alleged conditions.
Official Responses and Criticisms
Sherrill expressed deep concern over Delaney Hall’s conditions. She continues to call for its closure, coordinating efforts with other federal representatives and advocates to ensure oversight of the DHS.
Kim and Representative Rob Menendez were denied entry to the facility. Critics accuse the staff of mistreating detainees.
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey described Delaney Hall as dangerous, asserting that community members have opposed the treatment of detainees there.
DHS and ICE Statements
“All detainees are provided with meals, clean water, clothing, and other essentials,” DHS stated. “ICE standards in detention are higher than most U.S. prisons.”
DHS mentioned that comprehensive medical care is available, including dental and mental health services. They claimed many detainees received better healthcare in ICE custody than previously.
Democrats’ calls to close Delaney Hall persist. Last year, a protest involved clashing with authorities, leading to charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver for allegedly impeding law enforcement.
Homeland Security officials have previously categorized some Delaney Hall detainees as having criminal backgrounds. This labeling has stirred debate about advocating for them.
