The southern United States faces ongoing flood concerns after a rainy Memorial Day weekend. Approximately 15 million residents from Louisiana to Georgia are under flood alerts on Tuesday due to impending heavy rain and thunderstorms. These conditions may bring up to 2 inches of rain to certain areas.
Excessive rainfall is anticipated from the Carolinas to western Texas. In southwest Texas, including cities like Midland and Fort Stockton, large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are also possible hazards.
A driveway in Poplarville, Mississippi, was flooded on Monday, while cars in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex were stranded in water over the weekend.
New Orleans is under a flood watch until 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Showers and storms are expected to persist through the evening, potentially dropping up to 2 inches of rain in some areas. The Dallas-Fort Worth area experienced intense stationary thunderstorms on Memorial Day.
Atlanta is also on flood watch until 11 p.m. local time Tuesday. Rainfall totals between 0.75 to 1.25 inches are expected, with isolated areas possibly receiving up to 2 inches. Hourly rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches could trigger flash flooding, even in regions not officially under flood watch.
Additional precipitation is predicted for the region throughout the week, with exact rainfall amounts yet to be determined.
