Shortly after President Donald Trump announced his preference in the Texas Senate race, Senate Republicans experienced a shift in mood. Many were heading to their closed-door weekly meeting, intending to discuss stalled immigration funding and future strategies for a challenging week in the Senate. However, Trump’s support of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over long-time Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, surprised even the most forthcoming lawmakers. The shift raised concerns about risking a traditionally safe Republican seat.
TRUMP BACKS PAXTON IN TEXAS SENATE RUNOFF AGAINST CORNYN
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, expressed her disappointment. “This could place the seat at risk,” Murkowski commented. “The numbers suggest it could weaken the president’s standing if Texas is lost,” she added.
The winner of the primary face-off will compete against Texas state Rep. James Talarico, who defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, earlier. Talarico is collecting endorsements from influential Democrats, such as former President Barack Obama.
TALARICO EMERGES VICTORIOUS IN TEXAS SENATE PRIMARY
Historically, Republicans have held Texas in the Senate since 1988. Yet, many within the party viewed Cornyn as a more secure choice. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., voiced his continued support for Cornyn, saying, “We will win Texas, but John Cornyn was the safer candidate.”
Cornyn criticized Paxton’s controversies, including impeachment issues and personal scandals, warning that Paxton’s victory might burden the GOP in November. “Republican voters must decide between a strong candidate to support GOP down-ballot and defeat Talarico, or a weak one,” Cornyn stated.
Paxton’s campaign strategist, Nick Maddux, emphasized Paxton’s successful election history. “Cornyn offers no achievements after 42 years, so his only talking point against Paxton is invalid,” Maddux remarked. “Ken Paxton will be our Republican nominee and aims to unite the party.”
DEMOCRATS SENSE OPPORTUNITY AMID GOP INFIGHTING
As the primary reaches its conclusion, Cornyn faces Paxton one last time. Many Republicans remain cautious of backing Paxton, concerned about his political liabilities.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., had advocated for Cornyn. Despite Trump’s choice, Thune maintained support for Cornyn, labeling him a principled conservative and an effective state representative. Thune stressed, “Trump made his choice, which doesn’t alter my support for Senator Cornyn in his re-election.”
