Three climbers from Latvia have died during an expedition on Mount McKinley, located in Alaska’s Denali National Park. According to the Latvian Mountaineering Association, a fourth climber was rescued and is currently in critical condition.
Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, rises to 20,310 feet above sea level. The accident unfolded on Wednesday at approximately 18,000 feet, as reported by the U.S. National Park Service. This incident led to a rescue attempt on Thursday amidst challenging, yet progressively improving weather conditions.
On Friday morning, the Latvian Mountaineering Association identified the climbers who tragically lost their lives as Inese Pučeka, Vija Olte, and Renārs Kunigs-Salaks. Mārtiņš Bilzēns, who was critically injured, has been transported to a hospital for further treatment.
The U.S. National Park Service has not yet verified the fatalities or the identities of the climbers involved.
Known to many as Denali, the mountain was renamed to its original Alaska Native name last year by the administration of President Trump, revoking the name previously dedicated to President William McKinley, who had no personal connection to the mountain and was assassinated in 1901.
The primary climbing season for Mount McKinley extends from late April to mid-July. Most climbers participate in small, guided expeditions, with about 90% attempting the West Buttress route. The Park Service has noted that currently there are more than 500 climbers on the mountain.
The accident was reported on Thursday. Four members of a seven-person expedition reportedly fell in the Denali Pass area. Three remaining members managed to return to the high camp on Wednesday night after trying to rescue their team.
Denali Pass, situated at 18,200 feet, lies between the last high camp at 17,200 feet and the summit. This part of the climb is known for its steep and icy conditions. Climbers typically secure themselves through fixed pickets, placed at intervals of roughly 90 feet. It is recognized as one of the riskiest sections of the ascent.
