Trump Endorses Pamela Evette for South Carolina Governor

President Trump announced his endorsement of Pamela Evette, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, for the state’s next governor. This endorsement followed the state legislature’s special session, which ended without passing a new congressional map. The proposed map aimed to remove South Carolina’s only majority Black district and solidify a completely Republican delegation. Ms. Evette supported the redistricting plan.

In a statement on Truth Social, Mr. Trump praised Ms. Evette as a “good friend, fighter, and WINNER.” His endorsement indicates support for South Carolina’s current governor, Henry McMaster, who is barred from seeking another term and desires Ms. Evette as his successor. Mr. Trump also expressed his expectation that Ms. Evette would select Henry McMaster Jr., the governor’s son, as her lieutenant governor.

Six candidates are competing for the Republican nomination. These include Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, Alan Wilson, the state’s attorney general, and Rom Reddy, a former business executive. Both parties have scheduled their primaries for June 9.
