Emily Tilton transitioned from forward to defense last season under Naperville Central coach Troy Adams’ direction. Adams believed Tilton’s speed, evident in her indoor track performance, could strengthen the back line, despite defenders often receiving less recognition. “Defenders don’t get credit unless they score,” noted Adams, “Outside backs never get any credit. But she’s legit.” Tilton, now a sophomore, has skillfully defended against top players statewide. Most recently, she marked Benet senior forward Annie Fitzgerald in the Class 3A Naperville Central Sectional championship game. The intended strategy was for Tilton to track Fitzgerald, except when Fitzgerald moved to midfield where Nicole Smith would take over. Adams remarked, “The maturity she’s seen from freshman year to sophomore year is outstanding. Some college is going to be very fortunate because she’s flying under the radar.”
During the championship game, Naperville Central’s Emerson Burke and teammates celebrated her goal against Benet. Burke’s penalty kick secured a 1-0 win for top-seeded Redhawks. The Redhawks, boasting a record of 20-0-1 and 16 shutouts, are set to face Wheaton Warrenville South in the St. Charles North Supersectional. Benet, the third seed with a 19-3 record, experienced their first season shutout.
Fitzgerald praised both teams: “Huge props to both teams. Both teams knew going in that this was going to be the hardest teams that both of us have faced, but I’m super proud of how everyone played — their defense, our defense. These type of games are why you play, so I have absolutely no regrets. Best wishes to Naperville Central. They’re a good team. They’re well-coached. They’re physical.” Such challenging games demand Tilton’s utmost effort. “They’re all very good players, but I had to stay on them and try to stop them, not even win it sometimes, just stop it from going forward and advancing on toward the goal,” Tilton explained. “Our communication as a team really helped us all do well on defense.”
While Naperville Central is known for offensive strength, their defense consistently excels. Tilton has earned recognition from teammates. “Coach Adams has a knack about putting wingers into outside back,” said senior forward Malia Shen. “Emily really grew into the position this year. Her soccer IQ is very good, so she knows when to move up the field and when to stay back. She’s very patient and good about that.” Tilton’s defensive techniques were pivotal in marking Fitzgerald. Shen added, “Guarding Annie is always going to be challenging. She’s a really talented player, but I think Emily did a really good job of containing and not overstepping to the ball. Emily is a very well-rounded player. She did a really nice job.”
Benet faced challenges penetrating Naperville Central’s defense, relying on a few corner kicks. Tilton attributed their success to patience and positioning. “I think it was mostly patience, making sure not to step in a dangerous spot or not fouling,” Tilton said. “Obviously, we have a lot of very good people up top, so it’s just supporting them and making sure we do our job in the back.” While Adams initially moved Burke and Shen to defense last season, they resumed forward roles. Adams appreciates the strategic use of their speed. Burke observed, “She’s been incredible. Last season, she played great, but I feel like this season she’s gotten so much better and she’s just so much more confident. For her, she’s so fast, and it shows when she dribbles the ball, it’s so dangerous. Having her in the back is just so dangerous. She’s been winning the ball.”
With both defense and offense excelling, Naperville Central continues to secure victories. Burke’s goal marked her 37th of the season, enhancing her single-season team record. Although she missed scoring during a weather-disrupted tie against Barrington, she values winning above scoring. “Scoring goals is fun and all, but winning is more important to me,” Burke stated. “We’re just playing every game like it’s our last.”
