President Trump’s Approval Ratings Decline Across the US

1 month ago 0

More than a year into President Donald Trump’s second term, state-level polling reveals a decline in his approval across the nation. The most significant drops are observed in former strongholds.

Key Points

  • Trump’s net approval has declined in every state since January 2025.
  • The steepest declines are in traditionally Republican states.
  • Battlegrounds like Florida, Ohio, and Nevada show net disapproval.
  • Pro-Trump advantages have narrowed in his strongest states.

The data come from Civiqs’ online tracking poll of registered voters, using over 107,000 responses from January 20, 2025, to May 26, 2026. The figures compare state results from the beginning of Trump’s term with the latest estimates, using statistical modeling to smooth trends.

Every state shows a decline in Trump’s net approval since his second term began, with deep red states and battlegrounds seeing sharp falls.

Biggest Drops: Approval Declines Noted

The most notable reductions in net approval highlight Trump’s weakened position since taking office.

  • Wyoming: +47 to +22 (down 25 points)
  • Kentucky: +23 to 0 (down 23 points)
  • Nebraska: +18 to -4 (down 22 points)
  • Alaska: +9 to -12 (down 21 points)
  • Florida: +9 to -12 (down 21 points)
  • Oklahoma: +31 to +10 (down 21 points)
  • Nevada: 0 to -20 (down 20 points)
  • Maine: -12 to -31 (down 19 points)
  • Ohio: +8 to -11 (down 19 points)
  • Utah: +20 to +1 (down 19 points)

These figures signify a shift from comfortable pro-Trump margins to more uncertain standings, with some states reaching negative approval.

Swing States: Competitive to Negative

Battleground states have seen changes that may significantly impact national elections. Florida, Ohio, Nevada, and Nebraska have crossed into net negative territory.

Other states remain competitive but have shown slippage since the start of the term, reflecting a trend where Trump trails in important electoral regions.

Deep Red States: Eroding Support

In deeply Republican states like Oklahoma, Idaho, and Wyoming, support remains positive but is weaker than before. Wyoming’s net approval margin has significantly narrowed.

Deep Blue States: Sustained Opposition

In Democratic strongholds, Trump began his term with negative ratings that have since worsened. Opposition in states like California, New York, and Massachusetts remains entrenched.

Reasons for Decline

Across states with the largest declines, approval has dropped by 10 to 14 points, while disapproval has risen by 8 to 11 points. Wyoming shows a clear example of this trend:

  • Approval: 72 to 58 (down 14)
  • Disapproval: 25 to 36 (up 11)
  • Net: +47 to +22 (down 25)

This simultaneous movement in approval and disapproval rates signifies a broader change in voter sentiment.

A Familiar but Weaker National Map

Although the political map still appears structurally familiar, the strength of Trump’s support has weakened. States once comfortably supporting him now show narrower or negative margins.

The White House’s Response

The White House downplays these polling results, emphasizing Trump’s 2024 election victory as a mandate. Spokesperson Davis Ingle highlights Trump’s voter support, arguing that economic policies on jobs, inflation, and housing will prove impactful over time.
