Green Investors Show Support for Republican Pro-Clean Energy Candidates

1 month ago 0

A political action committee (PAC) representing wind and solar energy interests has recently allocated $1.1 million to support the Republican primary opponent of Chip Roy, a noted critic of renewable energy. This strategy reflects a broader trend where green investors aim to influence the political landscape by backing pro-clean-energy Republicans. The investors are also actively supporting a Republican ally in Iowa.

Earlier this week, a coalition of clean energy investors celebrated a major success in Texas after investing over $1 million to unseat one of the nation’s leading opponents of renewable energy initiatives. With an available fund of $15 million, this group intends to use its financial resources to influence national politics, particularly by supporting Republicans who favor wind and solar energy.

Thomas Matzzie, an executive in the renewable energy sector and leader of the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC, stated, “This is an effort to shape a pro-clean-energy majority in Congress, regardless of party.” The PAC draws financial backing from renewable energy developers and philanthropists, with considerable support from Chris Larsen, a billionaire and co-founder of the cryptocurrency platform Ripple.

Their efforts bore fruit on Thursday when Chip Roy, a Republican representative from Texas, lost a runoff for his party’s primary for Texas attorney general. The previous year, Mr. Roy had spearheaded efforts to eliminate manufacturing tax credits for wind, solar, electric vehicles, and other clean energy developments introduced during the Biden administration.

Mayes Middleton, a conservative state senator who triumphed in the primary, criticized Mr. Roy for insufficient dedication to former President Trump. The clean energy coalition amplified this criticism by investing $1.1 million in advertisements. These ads highlighted Mr. Roy’s disagreements with Mr. Trump and suggested that he was “not MAGA enough for Texas.”
