Britain Blocks Entry of Media Personalities Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker

The British government has prevented Cenk Uygur, a Turkish-American media personality, and his nephew, Hasan Piker, from entering the country. Both Uygur and Piker are known for their left-leaning views and have reported being barred due to their stances on Israel.

Cenk Uygur co-hosts The Young Turks, a popular YouTube channel, and Hasan Piker is a U.S. commentator with substantial influence online. The British interior ministry cited the reason for canceling their travel authorization as their presence might not be conducive to the public good, though the statement did not specify Israel.

They were scheduled to speak at the SXSW London festival and the University of Oxford. In response to the travel ban, Uygur expressed his disbelief by questioning the freedom to criticize Israel. Piker echoed similar sentiments regarding the cancellation of his visa.

SXSW London describes itself as a festival celebrating business, technology, and creativity. There were no specific mentions of Israel in the festival details for Uygur and Piker’s sessions titled “Techno-Feudalism is Here. Who Are the Lords?” and “How the American Left Learned to Speak the Internet” respectively.

The British government’s action mirrors previous instances where individuals were barred from entering the country. Earlier this year, 11 people described as “foreign far-right agitators” were blocked due to their association with anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson.

Concerns about free speech laws in Britain have been raised by figures like U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Uygur, who was a Democratic nominee in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, attracts significant attention through The Young Turks with over 200 million monthly views.

Hasan Piker, known for his presence on Twitch, engages a daily audience of around 30,000 people and was set to speak on how the American Left communicates through online platforms.
