A 66-year-old woman named Margaret Swan was fatally stabbed on a MARTA train in Atlanta. The attack has been described by transit police as random and senseless.
The incident occurred between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations. According to MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher, the victim was sitting alone when the suspect, identified as John Elijah Matthews, 25, allegedly attacked her.
This appears to be a senseless act of violence, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident.
Reportedly, Matthews approached Swan and, seconds later, cut her throat. The attack took place shortly before the train approached the Oakland City MARTA station. Surveillance footage recorded Swan struggling and calling for help while being stabbed 18 to 20 times.
Once the train arrived at the station, Matthews exited with the weapon still in his possession. Officers on the platform quickly apprehended him, charging Matthews with murder malice.
The attack happened at around 1:29 p.m. at the Georgia State MARTA station. Emergency responders attempted to save Swan, but she died at the scene.
Atlanta passengers have voiced increased concerns over transit safety, especially after another stabbing the previous week at the Georgia State Station. Fox News Digital has contacted the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for further details on the case.
