Overnight Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least nine Palestinians, as reported by local hospitals. This incident occurred while much of the global focus remains on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to Shifa Hospital, which received the bodies, the strikes in Gaza City were conducted at four different locations. Among the deceased were two women and two children.
Footage showed significant damage to a residential apartment building, where an upper floor was left with a massive hole. The blast resulted in destruction of interior walls, with bloodied belongings strewn around the room and onto the street.
Funerals for the victims took place on Thursday in Gaza City. Mourners expressed their grief over the ongoing violence. Walid Shbeir, the uncle of one of the victims, reflected on the persistent nature of these tragedies, stating, “They say the war has stopped, but the war has not stopped. Every night there is killing, and we have martyrs.”
The Israeli military has not commented on these latest strikes. Last week, Israel targeted and killed a top Hamas military leader, following similar actions against his predecessor.
Since the attempted ceasefire in October 2023, which aimed to end over two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, around 936 Palestinians have died due to Israeli strikes, as per Gaza’s Health Ministry. This ministry is part of the Hamas-led government and is considered a reliable source by various UN agencies and experts. However, it does not differentiate between civilian and militant casualties.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces continue to launch airstrikes and engage in shootings near military-held zones. In response to truce violations and perceived threats, Israel maintains its right to defend itself. Four Israeli soldiers have died in Gaza since the ceasefire was declared.
This ongoing situation is rooted in the events of October 2023, when Hamas launched an attack resulting in about 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages.
