The New York Public Library recently partnered with TALEA Beer Co. to recreate George Washington’s historic beer recipe. Recorded in Washington’s 1757 military journal, this brewing project offers visitors a chance to ‘taste history.’ The journal, part of the library’s collections, was kept during the Seven Years’ War when Washington commanded the Virginia militia. His recipe, referred to as ‘small beer,’ contains a low alcohol content and was a staple drink for his troops at Fort Loudon, Virginia.
Understanding George Washington’s Beer Recipe
The recipe includes a large sifter of bran hops, three gallons of molasses, and a quart of yeast. The process involves boiling the hops, mixing the molasses while hot, and letting the yeast work in a cooler until ready for bottling.
TALEA Beer Co., based in New York City, collaborated with the library to bring the recipe to life, also producing a modern Liberty Lager. Co-founder LeAnn Darland expressed excitement over the partnership and the challenge of recreating the historical brew. The original beer used molasses as the fermentable sugar, a choice influenced by the resources available to Washington and his troops.
Trial and Taste Testing
TALEA worked closely with the library to conduct taste tests. Although molasses today is more processed than in the 1700s, the team aimed to replicate the beer as authentically as possible. They also experimented with other sugars for variety.
A Modern Twist on History
Recognizing that the original brew might not appeal to modern tastes, TALEA developed Liberty Lager. This lager features a clearer, amber color and more hops to balance sweetness. Available at TALEA’s taprooms, the library will also offer samples during its America250 events.
LeAnn Darland, a Navy veteran, emphasized the unifying power of beer, hoping to foster community without political divides. She regards beer as a means of bringing people together, encouraging camaraderie and shared enjoyment.
