Former U.S. Representative George Santos is under investigation for his trading activities on the prediction market Kalshi. The inquiries involve potentially deceptive practices related to his claimed attendance at Trump’s State of the Union address in February.
On the previous day, a story was published revealing investigations by the Justice Department and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission into Santos’ market activities. Following this publication, Santos made an aggressive phone call expressing anger. He disputed the claims in the report and stated his lawyers found no evidence of such an investigation. Santos refused to disclose his legal representatives when questioned.
During the conversation, Santos issued a concerning remark that the story could lead to violence. Despite it sounding menacing, the threat felt more bizarre than imminent. Santos later denied making the violent comment, claiming he said the story would ‘blow up’ instead.
Santos took to the social media platform X to refute the allegations of aggression, claiming previous interactions with reporters were only ‘sassy’. He alleged that he was accused of having to disclose his lawyers’ names under threat of action.
Threats against journalists, often from online trolls or aggressive contacts, pose questions on their seriousness and necessity of response. Santos’ history and behavior prompted the decision to address the situation publicly. Recent reports indicate Polymarket, a competitor to Kalshi, has ended its association with Santos, who was compensated by them to promote their prediction markets. He is currently offering discounted videos on Cameo, though reliability of his statements remains uncertain.
