A Mother’s Journey: Overcoming Fear and Finding Support

1 month ago 0

Barb Barnes received daunting news over two decades ago: she needed open-heart surgery. Her active lifestyle had dwindled to the point where climbing stairs left her breathless. The surgery was booked for summer 2005.

As a single mother to her only child, Autumn, Barb worked to prepare them for the upcoming operation, both emotionally and practically. Yet fear gripped her. ‘I had great faith in the surgeon and team, but the thought of open-heart surgery was terrifying,’ she recalled.

The operation required them to travel several hours from home. The night before, they stayed in a budget hotel, ordered pizza, and watched a movie. Autumn remembers holding her mom tightly, fearing it might be their last night together.

Before sunrise, Barb settled Autumn next door with a relative. She felt she’d prepared her daughter as best she could, although guilt lingered for not being able to ease Autumn’s fears entirely.

The surgeon brought good news later that day: Barb’s surgery went better than expected. As anesthesia faded, Barb noticed a boost in her energy and breathing. However, the pain from the surgery was intense. Her ribcage had been opened to access the heart, making each breath or sneeze excruciating.

When a nurse suggested tapering off opioids, Barb initially refused. Fear of enduring the pain was overwhelming. But a conversation with a nurse changed her perspective. The nurse, who had battled her own opioid dependence, urged Barb to distinguish between fear and actual pain.

‘You’re confusing pain with fear,’ the nurse said, holding Barb’s hand.

Realizing the truth in the nurse’s words, Barb agreed to reduce her medication. The nurse promised to support her through the process. Barb’s view on pain shifted. She started experiencing it as a strong sensation instead of something life-threatening.

Barb underwent more medical procedures, learning to cope with pain without relying solely on medication. Her interaction with the compassionate nurse remained a pivotal moment in her life.

‘She stood with me, preventing me from going down a dark path. Without her, I might not have the strong relationships I cherish today,’ Barb said, expressing gratitude for her unsung hero.
