Boy’s Close Call with Fire Ants in Georgia

A two-year-old boy named Rolin from Thomasville, Georgia, faced a frightening ordeal after an encounter with fire ants while playing outside. His parents, Lexi and Cody Johnson, acted quickly when they noticed his face swelling. Lexi recounted to Newsweek how she rushed Rolin to the bathroom to wash the ants off with cold water. ‘It all happened so quickly,’ she said.

Fire ants are known for their aggressive stings, prevalent in the southern United States. Their venom can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Lexi contacted Rolin’s pediatrician, who alerted her to watch for facial swelling. Before the call ended, Rolin’s condition worsened, prompting immediate action.

Lexi grabbed Rolin from the bath and, with her oldest son’s help in fetching clothes, they headed to the emergency room. The family’s other children stayed with Lexi’s sister-in-law. During the drive, when Rolin’s cries subsided into sleepiness, Lexi grew increasingly worried. She kept reassuring him and ensuring he responded. Upon arriving at the hospital, Lexi rushed him inside, leaving her car unattended.

The hospital staff quickly recognized Rolin’s urgent need for care. Lexi recounted how an administrator expedited his treatment upon seeing his condition. Rolin received emergency care, including epinephrine, steroids, and antihistamines. Lexi provided comfort throughout the ordeal, emphasizing how shocking the experience was since Rolin had no prior allergic reactions to ant bites.

Lexi shared her story on Instagram, reaching nearly 7 million views. Although some criticized the family for not spotting the ant mound sooner, Lexi explained that these mounds aren’t always visible, despite regular pest control.

Thankfully, Rolin has fully recovered and returned to his playful nature. Lexi advises other parents to trust their instincts if they suspect something is wrong. ‘Living close to the hospital was crucial for us,’ she added.
