Officials have released the causes of death for three attendees at the 2026 Burning Man festival in Nevada. The event was marked by multiple fatalities, prompting an investigation into the circumstances.
The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the deaths resulted from cardiovascular disease and drug toxicity. Burning Man, held annually in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, took place from August 30 to September 7.
A 62-year-old man from Santa Monica, California, died on September 3 after collapsing at the festival’s Rampart Medical Center. His death was attributed to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Another participant, a 51-year-old man from Truckee, California, passed away in an ambulance on September 4. He had been experiencing chest pain. His cause of death was linked to methamphetamine and MDMA toxicity, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes, with chronic methamphetamine use also contributing.
The third victim, a 60-year-old man from Yuma, Arizona, was found deceased in his vehicle. His death was determined to be due to cocaine and methamphetamine toxicity, with cardiovascular disease as a contributing factor.
“The deaths of three Burning Man participants in 2026 all appear to be from natural causes, but we defer to the medical examiner for official determinations,” Burning Man organizers stated.
The festival draws tens of thousands of attendees, who gather to build Black Rock City. It focuses on communal effort, self-reliance, and self-expression. The event culminates in the ceremonial burning of a large wooden effigy known as “the Man.”
Burning Man organizers have expressed condolences to the families of the deceased participants. They encouraged attendees to focus on the individuals’ contributions and avoid speculation regarding the circumstances of their deaths.
