The Storied Plaza Hotel to Close for Extensive Restoration

1 day ago 0

Fox News has updated that one of New York City’s historic hotels is set to close for several years, leaving many adjusting their wedding plans. The Plaza Hotel, a symbol of luxury in Manhattan, is renowned for hosting upscale weddings, including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ 2000 nuptials and the 1968 gathering for Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower.

This Fifth Avenue icon, prominent in popular culture, has featured in films like “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” and “Bride Wars,” and is famously linked to the character Eloise from Kay Thompson’s children’s books. However, starting January 2027, the Plaza Hotel will shut its doors for a minimum of four years to undergo significant restoration.

The work focuses on repairing and restoring the historic façade, causing a substantial disruption in operations, as per the hotel’s press release shared with Fox News Digital.

The closure announcement has left many engaged couples, who had planned to wed at the Plaza, searching for new venues. The New York Post noted that some have discovered the closure through channels other than the hotel itself, adding to their uncertainty and frustration. One couple, as reported, had a 200-person wedding planned for May 1 and is now reconsidering their options.

Online reactions highlight sympathy for those whose wedding plans have been upended. Participants on social media expressed concern over the difficulty of finding comparable venues on short notice. The Plaza is known for hosting notable events like Patricia Kennedy and Peter Lawford’s 1954 reception.

The hotel’s history of grand celebrations makes its temporary closure significant. Details on the restoration project are still under discussion. The Plaza has been a backdrop for many notable events and movies, linking it deeply with both New York’s skyline and its cultural fabric.
