Fox News reports that Democrats have introduced a new candidate, who bares the same name as the incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska. Republican strategists express concerns that this move is a strategy to mislead voters. The confusion stems from the fact that both individuals share identical names.
Amber Lee, a progressive consultant, issued a press release regarding the candidacy of a second ‘Dan Sullivan’. This candidate has no connection to the current Republican Senator. Nick Puglia from the National Republican Senate Committee labeled this tactic as deceitful, claiming it aims to mislead Alaskans.
The Republicans have time to clarify this situation with voters ahead of Alaska’s primary in August. However, the filings indicate efforts to cause confusion in this crucial Senate race.
The campaign website promotes the opposition: “Dan Sullivan challenges Dan Sullivan for U.S. Senate Seat, urges Alaskans to defeat incumbent, elect a Sullivan who stands up for Alaska.”
This new Sullivan has a background in blue-collar jobs, including logging and construction. He decided to enter politics due to frustration with government operations, according to his biography. His campaign’s social media presence remains minimal, with no Instagram posts and just two followers.
Questions remain about the candidacy’s legitimacy. It is unclear whether this Sullivan submitted FEC filings or intends to run independently. In Alaska’s open primary, the top four candidates move to the general election. If chosen, this second Sullivan could further complicate the ballot for Alaska’s rural voters.
This tactic is especially significant in Alaska, where ranked choice voting allows voters to rank candidates by preference. This voting method could increase the influence of lesser-known candidates.
Documentation suggests Lee’s intentions to campaign for another Senate hopeful are implausible. Her consulting business, Amber Strategies, supports several progressive causes, reflecting her leanings. The Democratic challenger for Sullivan, Mary Peltoa, was also supported by Lee.
Alaska’s recent history mainly favors Republicans, but it elected Peltola in 2022 for its sole at-large district. Senator Dan Sullivan, elected in 2015, last won a reelection with a significant margin over Al Gross and continues to serve.
Alaska’s primary will be on August 18. Leo Briceno, a former World Magazine reporter, is a politics reporter for Fox News Digital.
