Controversy Follows Shooting and Graffiti Incident in Austin

2 weeks ago 0

A controversial situation unfolded in Austin, Texas, where a protester was seen spray-painting aggressive messages on a bridge. This occurred near the site where Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a Venezuelan man, was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The shooting happened as Garces Perez delivered food for DoorDash near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard.

The protest area has become a focal point since the incident. Graffiti messages on a bridge pillar included “F*** ICE,” “F*** Donald Trump,” “Kill all pedos,” “Kill Donald Trump,” and mentions of “Epstein.” Additionally, the word “Talarico” was painted along with a heart symbol and the phrase “love winz.”

Details about the shooting remain unclear. Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, Garces Perez’s attorney, stated that ICE officers in an unmarked vehicle sideswiped Garces Perez’s car twice. He was shot and hospitalized, later released into ICE custody with a bullet still in his body, and is currently experiencing paralysis on his left side.

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson identified Garces Perez as an “illegal alien” with a final order of removal. The DHS claimed the shooting occurred during a law enforcement operation.

According to Lincoln-Goldfinch, Garces Perez sought asylum in the U.S. through a parole program. She noted he possessed a valid work permit and that issues arose due to address changes. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that a thorough investigation is underway. The department is examining evidence, reviewing footage, interviewing witnesses, and collaborating with other agencies.

Davis encouraged anyone with information to come forward and assured them investigators will prioritize evidence over speculation. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

The graffiti incident provoked strong reactions on social media, primarily from right-wing commentators. Andrew Kolvet of Turning Point USA criticized the messages on X, contrasting them with media narratives. Conservative influencer Nick Sortor demanded severe repercussions for those responsible.

Democratic lawmakers, meanwhile, have called for further action regarding the shooting. James Talarico, a Democratic Texas state representative running for the U.S. Senate, urged for an independent investigation and the release of all related video footage. He emphasized Garces Perez’s compliance with legal entry processes and condemned the law enforcement actions as lawless.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed anger and disappointment over the incident, emphasizing that he wants Austin police to play a role in the investigation to ensure impartiality.

This situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as new information emerges.
