Danger of Saltwater Damage to Electric Vehicles in Southern California

60 minutes ago 0

Fire officials in Southern California are raising concerns about the risks posed by saltwater to electric vehicles and other battery-powered devices following recent coastal flooding. The Laguna Beach Fire Department highlights the potential for saltwater exposure to harm lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, hybrids, e-bikes, and scooters. This exposure might trigger fires days or even weeks later.

Tropical Storm Rachel has brought significant challenges. On October 10, 2026, waves surged onto walkways and crashed into beachfront properties in Long Beach, affecting areas as the storm approached. The storm’s impact prompted flash flood warnings in Orange, Riverside, and Imperial counties, with high tides surpassing 8 feet and surf from 5 to 8 feet causing substantial flooding and erosion.

“Vehicles may still pose a fire risk even if they seem to operate normally if saltwater reaches their batteries or electrical components,” officials caution.

In response, Long Beach mandated evacuations for homes along parts of Seaside Walk due to safety concerns. Authorities advise residents with possibly affected vehicles to avoid driving or charging them. Instead, they should contact their insurance provider, arrange for a professional tow, and have the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic experienced in electric or hybrid vehicles.

This warning extends to e-bikes and electric scooters exposed to floodwaters. Signs of a possibly dangerous battery include unusual smoke, noises like hissing or popping, and unexpected heat. Residents should immediately distance themselves from vehicles showing these signs and contact emergency services by dialing 911. Attempting to move such vehicles or put out battery fires without professional help can be dangerous.

The risks from battery damage may not be noticeable right away, with potential fires occurring well after the waters recede, emphasizing the importance of caution.
