Washington — An urgent situation confronts the Democrat Party as they face a rapidly closing window to replace Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner amid a sexual assault allegation. Should Platner decide to withdraw, the opportunity to maintain a strategic Senate race remains critical. With Republican Sen. Susan Collins seeking her sixth term, Democrats are pressing for a competitive replacement.
The pressure has mounted for Platner from the Maine Democratic Party and national leaders. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has vowed not to invest in his campaign following sexual assault claims by Jenny Racicot, a woman he dated. Platner denies the allegation but his campaign support dwindled after these claims surfaced. His past controversies include allegations of inappropriate behavior and problematic online posts.
Options for Replacing Platner
Maine law grants Platner until July 13 to withdraw, allowing for a substitute nominee. If so, the Democratic Party has until July 27 to select a new candidate. However, the party has yet to outline a decisive procedure. Dan Shea, a political science professor, suggests the process will likely involve a nominating convention with broad participation. Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson promises a process that is “open, transparent, and inclusive.”
Possible Replacements
With unclear prospects on who will replace Platner, potential candidates include Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former state Senate President Troy Jackson, and ex-CDC Director Nirav Shah. Jackson has shown interest and filed paperwork for a U.S. Senate exploratory committee. Shah has shown inclination too, advocating for a transparent selection process with debates.
Rep. Jared Golden, state Sen. Joe Baldacci, and former House staffer Jordan Wood are other high-profile figures. While Baldacci expressed disinterest, many want the successor to uphold Platner’s progressive values. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee insists the new nominee should disrupt the traditional power dynamics.
Challenges Against Susan Collins
The Democratic hopeful will face Collins in the election. Known for her adept campaign strategies, Collins has a strong presence in Maine politics. Ronald Schmidt, a professor at the University of Southern Maine, notes her strength even in the state’s Democratic-leaning areas. Democrats face the challenge of mobilizing voter enthusiasm to counter her influence.
Though daunting, there remains potential for Democrats. Shea argues Platner’s exit may enhance chances against Collins. Many voters agree with Platner’s policies but hesitated due to character concerns. Replacement may reignite Democratic energy in Maine.
