Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao traveled to China while her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was hospitalized. Despite the rumors surrounding his health, a spokesperson for Chao informed Fox News Digital that his condition was not severe enough to cancel her trip.
The spokesperson stated, “The secretary was on a long-planned trip to China to support her family’s philanthropic endeavors.” During this visit, she met with several individuals, including the U.S. ambassador. McConnell’s health at the time did not require an immediate return to the United States.
MCCONNELL WAS FOUND ‘UNCONSCIOUS’ IN HOME LAST MONTH AS CONDITION REMAINS UNKNOWN
Chao has since returned to the U.S., while McConnell remains hospitalized three weeks into his recovery. Details of his condition and his expected return to the Senate remain unclear. His office has not provided specifics about the situation of the 84-year-old Senate leader, who is poised to retire at this term’s conclusion.
Online rumors and speculative claims have emerged, with Laura Loomer, a conservative commentator, alleging that a “high level source close to the White House” described McConnell as “brain dead” and stated he “isn’t ever coming back.” The White House did not comment on Loomer’s assertions.
The rumors intensified following leaked audio from emergency dispatch related to McConnell’s hospitalization on June 14, suggesting he was “unconscious” and possibly suffered a heart attack.
In response to Loomer’s claims, McConnell’s office provided Fox News Digital with a previous statement. The statement conveyed appreciation for the support McConnell is receiving during his hospital recovery. It confirmed that McConnell continued to improve while actively working on Kentucky and Senate matters as the Senate remained out of session.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., have made efforts to dispel rumors. They reported phone calls with McConnell, asserting substantive discussions on various topics including national security.
A spokesperson for Thune confirmed a phone call with McConnell lasted “a lengthy and substantive conversation” covering various issues. Barrasso’s representative mentioned a 20-minute call discussing Senate races, political scandals, and a recent Supreme Court verdict.
During the call, McConnell also discussed the Senate’s upcoming July session, emphasizing the need to pass the National Defense Authorization Act and confirm a nominee for Director of National Intelligence. Barrasso noted, “Senator McConnell was fully engaged and is eager to get back to the Senate.”
