Dodgers Make Strategic Trade for Tarik Skubal

The Los Angeles Dodgers successfully acquired Tarik Skubal, the two-time Cy Young recipient, from the Detroit Tigers. This move followed promising trade talks that had Dodgers’ president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman feeling optimistic. Prior to the team’s game against the Red Sox, Friedman updated manager Dave Roberts with positive news. ‘I heard that it was pretty much done,’ Roberts noted. However, medical checks were still needed, and the deal wasn’t finalized at that moment.

Friedman remained cautious until he received final confirmation from the Tigers. During the game, he refrained from getting too excited. The trade involved the Dodgers sending three prospects—outfielder Zyhir Hope, ranked 25th on MLB Pipeline’s top 100, right-handed pitcher River Ryan, ranked 68th, and right-hander Brady Smith—to the Tigers in exchange for Skubal. The official announcement came on Sunday.

Although the Dodgers were initially expected to have a quiet trade deadline, many in the industry viewed the acquisition of Skubal as almost guaranteed. This move was not essential for the Dodgers, yet desirable. ‘Friday it started picking up a little bit,’ Friedman said. By Saturday, discussions intensified, and the focus was on ensuring an aggressive approach to secure the deal.

‘We were of the mind to be aggressive for one player this deadline, and fortunately we were able to line up.’

The industry was caught off guard by the timing and the trade return. The Dodgers managed the trade without altering their major-league team. Ryan, a promising pitcher, has struggled with health issues, which have kept him from more league appearances.

Friedman acknowledged the talent given up. ‘We gave up a lot of talent. These guys have the potential to be really good major-league players,’ he said. But given the Dodgers’ core team’s position, an aggressive stance made the most sense.

Skubal adds depth to a rotation that includes notable pitchers like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani. ‘I think it’s arguably the best rotation of all time,’ said catcher Dalton Rushing. According to Miguel Rojas, a veteran player, ‘It’s a statement from this organization that they’re not satisfied with the past few seasons.’

Nonetheless, health concerns persist. Skubal and Snell both underwent elbow surgeries, and while Skubal has returned to the field, Snell is close to completing his rehab. Glasnow has dealt with back spasms, and Ohtani’s knee issue adds another layer of uncertainty. Friedman expressed confidence that Ohtani would resume pitching soon.

As Ohtani requires a buildup to reach his full pitching strength, the Dodgers will temporarily fill his rotation spot with Skubal. Making his debut Tuesday against the Cubs in Chicago, Skubal stands ready to contribute.

Even after Skubal’s acquisition, the Dodgers are exploring additional trade opportunities. While Friedman mentioned that adding to the major-league roster is ‘less likely,’ he maintained an open stance on future deals.
